Walk Programme

Please Note All walks start at 10:00 am Unless otherwise stated.

Most walks listed below are intended primarily for Ramblers' Association members. Non-members are welcome to join us as guests on two or three walks, though if you walk with a group regularly you will be expected to join the RA.

Please make sure that you are fit enough to undertake the walk you intend to join. If you're unsure of your fitness level, try a short and easy walk first: it's much better to find a walk a little too slow and easy than to make yourself miserable and exhausted.

Most Ramblers' walks are off-road in rural areas. Please have suitable footwear and clothing for the walk you intend to join, and bring some food and drink, even if the walk includes a pub or café break. Leaders may refuse to accept participants who in their opinion are inadequately equipped or unfit. When in doubt, contact us in advance.

For your own and others' safety please follow the instructions of the walk leader. Though walking is inherently one of the safest outdoor activities, no activity is completely without risk and it is your responsibility to behave sensibly and to minimise the potential for accidents to occur

The footpaths we enjoy walking desperately need people to care for them and monitor their use and misuse. Without this care it is all too easy for the paths that we depend on for our walking leasure to become impassable. So if you can possibly do so please consider one or even both of the following:-

  • LOCAL FOOTPATH OFFICER. (3 posts vacant: one each for Ashford, Tenterden and the Eastern Parishes ) At present Peter Whitestone and Len Micklewright cover the whole of the Ashford District and ideally we need another three Local Footpath Officers. The post involves dealing with proposals for footpath diversions, extinguishments and creation received from the K.C.C.  Checking planning applications that may affect our footpaths in the Ashford Borough.
  • PARISH FOOTPATH WARDEN. There are currently some 40 parishes without a Footpath Warden. The job, simply put, is to walk all footpaths in the parish at least once a year reporting any defects to the K.C.C. Publics Rights Of Way Officer and possibly to assist the Local Footpath Officer. If interested please contact Peter Whitestone for further details. 01580 291596  or email summerhillkent@onetel.com
  • Footnote. Our Chairman John Wellard will, unfortunately, be retiring from his post at the coming AGM as the pressure from his full time employment is making it impossible for him to continue. Please consider either standing yourself or proposing another for this post which is an important part of the framework around which your committee is formed.
  • Another Footnote. We urgently need more members prepared to lead our walks before we wear out those that we currently have. Please give this your urgent thoughts and please contact me David Gatward   tel.01580 762355  mob. 07976 530795  or by email rambleon@orange.net

                                                     LESBIA PERCIVAL of Biddenden

Those of our members who have met or who know of Lesbia will be saddened to learn of her death earlier this year. She had been fighting cancer for some time.

As a long serving County Secretary of the St. John Ambulance Lesbia was also an enthusiastic member of the Ashford Rambler’s for whom she was, for a period, Honorary Secretary.
