           ASHFORD RAMBLERS NEWSLETTER

JULY 2010

Hopefully by now we should have enjoyed a good Spring and are now basking in Summer sunshine whilst we are looking forward to continuing with those walks through our splendid county and anywhere else you have chosen.

I must thank those of you who agreed to receive their Walks Programme and Newsletter by email as this will save us some money and if any more of you are prepared to allow this we will save even more as well as being  eco friendly, less paper, less ink etc. If any of you are hovering on making the decision to allow me to send your Walks and Newsletter by email please be reassured that your details are not shared with anybody not even Ramblers Central Office!

Those of you who know Peter Whitestone will know that he has moved to Cranbrook which has meant that he has had to give up being our Parish Footpath Warden for Biddenden. He did, however, manage to find a replacement but unfortunately the person has had to retire on health grounds. So here we are again needing your help. Our Parish Footpath Wardens are the bedrock of the Ramblers organisation that fights to keep the Public Rights of Way open as they provide the system with details of any problems with their area network of paths. This can then be passed onwards to KCC via our Local Footpath Officers who are empowered to deal directly with the Local Authority.             So if you feel that you could fill this vital role please contact Andrew Prince The Chairman and Secretary of Ashford Ramblers, either tel 01233 668762 or email  him at ashfordramblersgroupsec@talktalk.net

Our regular band of walkers will also remember that a ‘sign in Sheet’ was tried on a few occasions in an attempt to locate new members, the plan being that the sheet was then sent to me. Unfortunately I didn’t really think it through with a sensible plan but I’m back again with version no. ?  This time I am proposing that each Walk Leader has a ‘sign in sheet’ on  which all Guests fill in their Names and telephone no or email address. This will allow us to monitor not only visitor numbers but how many times each visitor joins us a guest so that Diane our Membership Secretary can make contact to discuss their joining when they have attended at least 3 times. They will also be able to tick a box to indicate how they found the walk details e.g. online or in the press so that we can assess the success of our advertising. Members simply add their name which will enter them for the award of ‘THE DOUGLAS LYCETT WALKER of THE YEAR MEMORIAL CUP’ which has been generously donated by the Lycett family in memory of Douglas and will be presented at the AGM. The Walk leaders who, are automatically entered, post the completed sheet to me in the stamped addressed envelope provided. The cost of this exercise will be funded by any new members that we attract and the saving made by those of you who allow me to use their email addresses.

Please note that I will continue to include a Sheet for those who wish to Lead a Walk as this also saves postage and is currently working well.  Lastly thanks to all of you who join and those who lead our walks, you make a sunny or a wet day memorable.

The group AGM on the 6th November will be held this year at Appledore Village Hall (OS Ref TQ 955295).

There will be a prewalk at 10.00, bring sandwiches.

A celebrity talk at 14.00 and the meeting proper will start approx 14.45. A raffle will be organised during the afternoon and it is hoped that donations for the prizes will be received members during the tea coffee break after the walk.

An agenda for the meeting will be placed on the Ashford Ramblers website and paper copies available before the meeting as normal
